C&A: A Look Back Through the Years

As a new decade begins to take shape, it’s interesting to take a few minutes to reflect on the past and see how far C&A has come as a company.  At C&A, not only has the staffing industry as a whole seen tremendous growth, our company has experienced a similar series of growth activity, plus company accomplishments, and service to others.

I personally experienced almost eight years of that ten-year period.  Trust me, it’s been one wild, but very exciting and gratifying ride. And the best part is there’s more to come!

During the next few weeks, I’m going to blog about where we’ve been as a company and take a closer look at the last decade of C&A Industries, Inc. in regard to these three main areas: growth, accomplishments, and service.

Growth: C&A Industries Adds New Divisions, More Employees
When I started in 2002, our offices were at 118th & Q Streets.  Our commercial staffing divisions, Celebrity Staff, Aureus Group, and AurStaff were market leaders and doing well, but the firm was really making headway within the medical staffing industry.  At that time, Aureus Medical was a national leader in the Allied Health staffing market and the recently formed Nursing division was picking up steam.

In 2001, C&A started the Aureus Nursing division, which today ranks as the 4th largest nurse staffing division in the US. Gradually, other medical specialty divisions followed. Laboratory, Advanced Practice, Physicians, Cardiopulmonary, and Pharmacy have all grown into very formidable business units, serving hospitals and healthcare clients across the country.

In 2002, the Lakeside office location (2425 S. 171st Street) was built for the expanding Nursing division, which had outgrown its small initial Q Street office space. This two-story red brick facility remains the headquarters for Aureus Nursing. For those familiar with Omaha, I know it may be hard to imagine this now, but when Lakeside was opened, the only developed property to the west was the Baker’s Supermarket/Gordman’s shopping complex across the street.  None of the land west of there was developed. Today, if you drive west on West Center past 171st, you see a ton of retail, numerous restaurants, new housing developments and the cities of Omaha and Elkhorn have essentially become one. The expansion in that part of Omaha has been remarkable.

A few years later, the internal C&A employee count had grown by more than 200 percent and it was apparent that more office space would be needed to facilitate future expansion and growth.  The company also wanted to consolidate departments and leverage the synergies that result when people are working together in the same location.

On a very cold February day, all of C&A’s employees were bussed to the groundbreaking ceremony at our current 136th & Dodge Street C&A Plaza location. A few months later, we walked through the building as it was under construction. It was neat to try and envision where you’d be working and what the building would look like.

Finally in June of 2007, we all packed up our desks and moved in. It was awesome. The all glass exterior provides some fantastic views and the design is very open with lots of natural lighting.  Our owners and officers did it right when it comes to equipment, décor, and creating a professional but very efficient environment. When people visit our building, the compliments are many.

Our offices outside of the Omaha area, in Kansas City, Missouri; Des Moines, Iowa; and Lincoln, Nebraska have seen changes as well. In 1998 we moved from Overland Park, Kansas to the prestigious Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri to accommodate a larger staff of Aureus Group and Celebrity Staff combined. Aureus Group and Celebrity Staff also share office space in Lincoln and Des Moines.

As a new decade begins at C&A, we’re excited about the future and what lies ahead for our organization and employees. We’re well positioned for continued growth and our commitment to maintain our position as a national leader in the staffing industry has never been stronger.
