An intern’s life at many companies around the country probably consists of pretty boring, useless tasks that may include grabbing coffee for a boss or filing papers all day. Here at C&A, this is not the case. Even in the accounting office, I find myself with many different opportunities to show off my skills as well as develop new ones. Whether it is just a simple task such as entering invoice numbers and check amounts into an excel spreadsheet to submit to PeopleSoft or a more difficult task like creating the spreadsheet to send to the state so that C&A can use the LB 312 statute to receive a refund of a majority of their sales tax paid. Sure, there have been a few times when I did not have much work to do when I would finish certain projects (happens to everyone), but for the most part I have stayed busy.
The work definitely hasn’t been the only positive aspect of this internship for me. Here at C&A they also have given us all a chance to learn more about ourselves and how we can become better versions of ourselves. Each one of us took the DiSC and Strengthsfinder personality assessments and then got to be a part of group discussion relating to our findings. Not only did I find out a few things about myself that I did not know before, but I also was able to see how these findings can help me thrive in both a work environment and in my personal life. In addition to these two assessments, we have had the chance to meet all of the executives during catered lunches and learned about how they got to where they are now with the company as well as ask them any questions we may have had. I definitely took special attention to all of this as one my fraternity’s sayings is “I will strive in all ways to transmit the fraternity to those who may follow after, not only not less, but greater than it was transmitted to me”, and I truly believe that here at C&A they are doing that same thing with new employees/interns in their own “fraternity” in the workplace.
Overall, my experience here at C&A has been a great one and I am thankful for the opportunity. Every single employee I have met has been wonderful and always seemed excited that I was with the company. Working in the accounting office is definitely one that I won’t forget as everyone took an interest in me and always made me feel welcome. They also showed me that you can have great relationships in the workplace with the people around you. Accountants are sometimes stereotyped as being boring people with dull personalities. This office proved that stereotype wrong as there was excitement and chatter all the time. As I have gone through school I always thought that a good job for me would be one where I enjoy the work I am doing and nothing else would really matter. However, in my seven weeks as an intern at C&A, I have found that the work is only a small portion of what will make you love your job. In my opinion, the people are really what make or break a person’s view on their job as it really doesn’t matter how much you enjoy the actual work you are doing if you cannot stand the people around you. This is why I have really enjoyed my time here no matter what type of work I was doing, because I was constantly surrounded by great people. Due to all of this, I believe without a doubt that my experience here at C&A has helped provide me with the tools that will allow me to succeed and continue to progress towards my goals in life.
Andrew (Drew) Madsen is a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in Accounting & Finance. He is participating in the Intern program at C&A Industries, working in the Accounting department on a variety of daily tasks and projects. Drew is a very competitive person who has a passion for analyzing detail while always looking for the right answer in whatever he is doing. When Drew is not working, he enjoys playing sports, spending time with his friends and family, and wakeboarding at the lake.
