Two years ago C&A launched a professional development program based on the concepts in the best-selling book, The Energy Bus, by Jon Gordon. Since then, the positivity-based, be the driver of your own bus movement has taken hold within our organization and has evolved to include more employees more activities.
Our Fall session of year ended on a high and heartwarming note this week with a final rally that illustrated just what it is that makes the C&A team so very special.
Buses (led by bus drivers) have been meeting for the past six months to discuss The Energy Bus, tackle case studies, and to plan and implement their positivity-themed projects. During the group presentations many participants talked of the rewards of working closely with co-workers they may not have otherwise in their day to day roles.
This was not the first Energy Bus session since it was launched at C&A but it was the first to incorporate a community component. What did the buses come up with? One group volunteered at the Open Door Mission to pack and distribute sack lunches to the homeless. They included an uplifting quote and a candy cane with each bag. Have you seen the positivity Post-It boards in breakrooms? That’s the work of the Aur-Dream bus. This group also spent two evenings interacting with youth at Girls Inc. They led a reading of The Energy Bus, talked about attitude, bullying, and the power of a positive mindset. Another group created flyers with positivity pull-tabs. Their community project was a visit to the Ronald McDonald House.
Other groups volunteered and donated clothing & necessities to the Women’s Center for Advancement; made fleece blankets for patients in Hospice; and distributed “No Energy Vampires Allowed” cards to C&A employees. The group followed up with a visit to a local elementary school to talk about The Energy Bus and optimism.
Not all projects have been completed. One team, the Vision Victors, is working with a local elementary school to create a “kindness tree” during the school’s “Week of Kindness” in February. They’ll spend time with classes of 5th graders to read and discuss concepts in the book. They hope the movement will spread throughout the school.
What an incredible impact these busses have made while new friendships were formed in the process. As one C&A employee said during the series of presentations, “Thoughtful gestures go a long way.”
