Throughout the daily tasks, recruiting calls, market research projects, and weekly intern classes, it’s been quite the busy summer for me and my fellow 19 interns involved with C&A’s Skills for Success summer internship program. We have attended classes geared toward giving efficient feedback, acting with professionalism in the workplace, writing blog posts, and exploring our top 5 Gallup CliftonStrengths. In addition to capitalizing upon these soft skills, we have learned about C&A as a company and the staffing industry as a whole.
Most recently on June 21st, we were also given the opportunity to volunteer during the 2018 United Way of the Midlands Day of Action. During this experience, we spent the afternoon at Franklin Elementary School reading to several groups of kindergarten students. Each of us was paired with a group of 2-3 kindergarteners and helped them each read a book and begin a coloring worksheet to keep track of all the books they plan to read this summer.
All of the students received a bag stocked with posters, brochures for summer activities, and multiple books, as well. One of the books was titled, Kindness is Cooler, Mrs. Ruler, which highlights the importance of doing good deeds for friends, families, and teachers. Personally, I enjoyed the book as much as the kindergartners! Overall, the day was a success, as we were able to dedicate an afternoon reading to these students and reinforcing the value of reading.
Each day brings with it new assignments and responsibilities, my time as an intern at C&A has reinforced the value of giving back to the community. By volunteering at Franklin Elementary School, I was reminded of the power of how simple activities, such as reading to a child for two hours, can make a difference in the lives of others.
