C&A is proud to foster an environment that encourages and supports our employees to live an active and healthy lifestyle. Through our health and wellness committee, we offer countless opportunities for employees to incorporate wellness into their lives, both at work and at home.
Each year C&A employees have the opportunity to nominate our colleagues for the Total Wellness Award. This award recognizes a member of the C&A team who embodies various dimensions of wellness and incorporates them into their everyday lifestyle. We identify these dimensions of wellness as physical, emotional, social, spiritual, occupational, and intellectual.
We’re proud to announce Windy Bullock as our 2018 recipient. Windy has worked in the Accounting department at C&A for almost eight years, is a member of our health and wellness committee, and plays an active role in our Weight Watchers at Work program. We chatted with Windy about her personal wellness journey!
What have you enjoyed most about being a member of our health and wellness committee?
I love being able to come up with new ideas, renovate past ideas/projects to create a bigger interaction, and see our employees engaged in healthier ways of life while having fun.
When did your wellness journey begin?
My journey for a healthier lifestyle began a few years ago. My goal was to incorporate healthier food habits at home first, before adding in extracurricular activities. It was a struggle in the beginning; I wasn’t the only one in my family who needed to adopt healthier habits. My family members are picky eaters, which makes meal planning quite difficult at times. The good thing about being in charge of cooking is I was able to make sure that as I was making better choices in what I was cooking everyone for the week. In the beginning of my wellness journey, sometimes making healthier meal choices just meant that there was a salad or fruit offered along with dinner, or on the nights we would normally eat fried food I would bake fries and chicken.
After you changed your family diet, what came next?
Once we got our eating habits under control, we began to add some physical activity into our weekly routine. We joined a gym as a family. We found a place that everyone could utilize, knowing everyone would be at different levels and had different needs, but could all enjoy and reap the rewards.
What successes have you seen through your wellness journey?
Being a part of the Weight Watchers at Work program, I was able to hit my goal and become a lifetime member. Not only did I lose and maintain the weight loss, I began working to lose body fat as well, while adding muscle mass. Then I began to challenge myself even more. I would take a jog over my lunch hour, utilizing the trails around work. I ran my first 5k. I’m not a runner by any means, but it felt so good accomplishing it, that I did one more race, the Susan G. Komen. I stepped it up another notch and began challenging myself mentally by going back to school full-time working on two associate degrees, as well as working a part-time job, too.
What motivates you to keep improving your overall health and wellness?
What motivated me to begin this whole process was my son, who was a senior in high school at the time. I wanted to be an example of what was achievable; that you can do many things if you put your mind to it, make sacrifices, work hard for it, and have a good support system. Along the way I’ve had to make sacrifices such as use my lunch hour for homework time or cut back on runs/challenges. But I always do what I can to dedicate at least one hour a week to my physical health. Because of the sacrifices that I’ve made, I’m able to show my family that hard work really does pay off!
How do you remain motivated to live a healthy lifestyle?
It’s about understanding that there will be times when exceptions have to be made-whether it is eating fast food because we’re in a rush or maybe skipping the gym to go take care of a homework assignment. When those sacrifices have to be made, it’s important to always return back to doing our very best to maintain healthy habits and a healthy lifestyle. My ultimate goal and motivator is to enjoy life to its fullest and have fun doing it. Our health is a big part of that!
Any advice for others who are considering starting their own wellness journey?
Do you! Everyone begins at different points in their lives. You have to recognize what you want and how you’ll achieve it in measurable goals. It’s not a sprint, but a marathon. Whatever you do, you decide if this is a lifestyle you can maintain. You will have to put in the work and grow your mindset, but it’ll all be worth it in the end. Stay positive and engaged!
Congratulations, Windy, on your Total Wellness Award and for your success in your personal health and wellness journey.
