In May, C&A welcomed 27 talented individuals to participate in this year’s Skills For Success Summer Internship Program. During their time here at C&A, these interns have already participated in various professional development trainings we provide and have become fully immersed within their division. This unique internship program will equip these students with new skillsets that will benefit them in their future careers. Here is part one of “Meet our Summer Interns” of 2019!
Elizabeth Kaffenberger Age: 20 School: Evangel University Major: Business Management Division: Aureus Medical, Rehabilitation Therapy
Why did you choose to work at C&A?: A mutual friend worked for the company and loved his experience. He recommended the internship program so I checked it out on LinkedIn and sent in an application! The biggest thing that drew me to this internship over the other options was it’s rating as one of the best places to work in Omaha for over 8 years, and after working here I can see why!
What is your favorite thing about working at C&A?: The people! The culture at C&A is top of the line. Everyone is supportive, encouraging, and wants you to succeed.
What makes C&A different from other internship programs?: The professional development courses are one of the things that makes this internship program so unique. When I was looking at other internship programs, none of the other places I considered provided a structured program devoted to developing us professionally. About 25% of our internship here at C&A is spent in classes growing and learning about how to be at our best in the workplace!
What is one thing that you would say to people who are looking for an internship?: Apply for various opportunities because you never know what might be the best fit for you! Once you get an interview with a company, make sure you’re also interviewing them. Don’t just pick a job because you think it will look good on a resume. Ask the important questions to your interviewers to find out more about the culture, your daily responsibilities, and whatever is important to you to make sure you’re finding the best fit!
What is your end goal and how can C&A help you get there?: Although I’m not sure what I want to do for a career upon graduation, C&A has provided me with key skills that will open doors for me in future opportunities. Through this internship I have learned additional communication, time management, problem solving, and collaboration skills that will be crucial in any full-time career.
Shayla Cox Age: 21 School: Central College Major: Aureus Medical, Pre-Nursing Track majoring in Psychology and Spanish Division: Nursing-Sales and Recruiting
Why did you choose to work at C&A?: C&A is a corporation of opportunity. As a driven and motivated individual, I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the collective work ethic and culture of C&A.
What is your favorite thing about working at C&A?: I love the people I get to work with every day. In my role, I love connecting with the amazing nurses we work with over the phone and Friday morning trivia with my team. One of my favorite moments so far was running into Stephanie Putnam at my 5:15am hot yoga class.
What makes C&A different from other internship programs?: C&A goes above and beyond with their training programs to ensure that their interns are engaged and learning not only about the corporation, but about themselves and what they bring to the table. Training doesn’t end after the first week. Just as they do with their employees, C&A ensures that their interns are constantly growing and evolving.
What is one thing that you would say to people who are looking for an internship?: I would tell them to focus on finding an internship that will accelerate their growth and prepare them not only for their career, but life after college in general.
What is your end goal and how can C&A help you get there?: As I said before, I have always been interested in travel nursing. With my educational background, there are multiple routes I would consider taking, but travel nursing has remained at the top of my list for the longest time. My role at C&A has immensely increased my knowledge on the field. It has also given me countless opportunities to connect with amazing nurses who are already on assignment. However, my role here has also opened me up to some other paths I could take. I have discovered my love for recruiting and connecting with people over the phone as well as my competitive nature. In the future, I could definitely see myself working with C&A, whether that would be as a recruiter or as a traveler.
Jake Feuker Age: 20 School: University of Nebraska-Lincoln Major: Supply Chain Management Division: Aureus Medical, Payroll/Billing
Why did you choose to work at C&A?: I saw that C&A was recognized as one of the best places to work in Omaha eight times. So when I looked into the company, I saw they offered The Skills for Success summer internship program, which seemed like an amazing opportunity that I didn’t want to pass up.
What is your favorite thing about working at C&A?: The people and the work culture are definitely my two favorite things. My team makes coming into the office everyday enjoyable.
What makes C&A different from other internship programs?: As an intern here, I am getting a chance to do real work in an office and I feel like I am part of the team. They have high expectations for me and it pushes me to work harder on a daily basis.
What is one thing that you would say to people who are looking for an internship?: Do your research in the company. Be prepared to get out what you put into the summer internship.
What is your end goal and how can C&A help you get there?: I hope to meet people that I can learn a thing or two from as I continue to work towards my degree and eventually start my career. I will also understand the corporate world and the dynamics of working in an office setting.
Jasmine Boyce Age: 20 School: University of North Carolina at Charlotte Major: Communications Division: Marketing
Why did you choose to work at C&A?: I chose to work at C&A Industries because the internship program looked like it would submerge me into the corporate world and teach me valuable skills to utilize in my future career.
What is your favorite thing about working at C&A?: I really love the people that work in the Marketing department. Everyone is so nice and always willing to help me learn more!
What makes C&A different from other internship programs?: C&A is a lot more formal and structured than my previous internships, but I have enjoyed learning and adapting to the corporate dynamics. They also provide trainings that focus on professional development which is amazing.
What is one thing that you would say to people who are looking for an internship?: Don’t be afraid to branch out and try something new. Step out of your comfort zone and take any opportunity that presents itself to you. Also, when you get an internship, ASK QUESTIONS. Take as many notes as you can and utilize your time wisely. If you feel like there is nothing for you to do, be proactive and ask for more projects or start studying up on soft skills that could benefit you in the future! You will truly make the most out of the internship if you fully dedicate yourself to it.
What is your end goal and how can C&A help you get there?: My end goal is to leave Omaha with a variety of new skills and a quality professional portfolio that I can present to my future employers in North Carolina. C&A is already doing so much to set me up for success when I return home. Teresa, my boss, is helping me set up my portfolio, scheduling different job shadowing, and including me on ongoing projects and meetings. She has been awesome and I can tell she truly cares about setting me up for success!
Mary Raitt Age: 21 School: Creighton University Major: Health Administration and Policy Division: Aureus Medical, Nursing Recruitment
Why did you choose to work at C&A?: I wanted to challenge myself to build a new skillset! Sales and Recruiting always intimidated me, so I wanted to face it head-on!
What is your favorite thing about working at C&A?: I love the work culture! Everyone is so open and willing to help you in any way they can.
What makes C&A different from other internship programs?: They want us to have a skillset that can be applied anywhere, not just internally here. They want us to be successful overall rather than training us to specifically work here in the future. That sense of support is very rare!
What is one thing that you would say to people who are looking for an internship?: Reflect on your priorities. Make sure the potential internship’s priorities align with yours and don’t be afraid to try things that may feel out of your range. Making yourself uncomfortable and trying new jobs or areas of work will make you a more adaptable and a well-balanced individual. This is very valuable for future careers and for life in general.
What is your end goal and how can C&A help you get there?: My end goal is to possibly work in LTC administration or get my MPH and work as a Community Health Program Coordinator. C&A has already done so much to support me with these goals! In my interview for this internship, I expressed my goals and Stephanie Putnam in HR said she would recommend I go to nursing recruitment to be able to talk with nurses to see that side of the industry more. I was also able to shadow a SNF account manager who had experience as an administrator in an LTC facility. She is going to get me connected to more people in that field in the Omaha area. I feel like C&A really wants me to succeed and will help me get there in any way they can.
Natalee Hanway Age: 22 School: University of Nebraska-Omaha Major: Political Science Division: Celebrity Staff
Why did you choose to work at C&A?: I was recruited for a project in October, and I’ve been here ever since.
What is your favorite thing about working at C&A?: The people and the developmental training are two of my favorite things at C&A.
What makes C&A different from other internship programs?: The program focuses on building transferable skills that will be useful in any career.
What is one thing that you would say to people who are looking for an internship?: Find one that isn’t going to just teach you one specific skill; find one that will help you get more training overall.
What in your end goal and how can C&A help you get there?: I am going to law school after I graduate and Celebrity has been amazing by helping me form connections to grow my network.
We look forward to seeing even more great work from our interns during our summer internship program. Stay tuned for the next blog introducing more of our talented interns!
