Are you inspiring the people around you to re-attack their day each time you speak?
Have you ever had such a terrible day that you just wanted to punch something? Or are you like me and enjoy letting your frustrations out on the pavement with your running shoes? As a student-athlete on the track and field team at the University of Nebraska, I am partial to the latter.
All I wanted during the school year was a summer internship in my college town. When my wish was granted, I took a step back and realized I was now entering the real world. Working a summer internship is one of the most rewarding yet challenging aspects of growing up.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the most incredible of them all? You most certainly are! A survey of adults by the American Psychological Association discovered that the most important factor to happiness and well-being is self-esteem.
Last year, I arrived for my interview at C&A Industries 45 minutes early, worried that my car would spontaneously break down or I’d be delayed by Omaha’s bustling mid-afternoon traffic. Aiming for, “Wow, she’s prompt and responsible!” rather than, “Is that girl still sitting in the lobby?”
The few weeks before Christmas are my favorite time of year. I love that people are full of cheer, the city is beautifully lit, and classic songs and movies play around the clock. Best of all is the atmosphere of giving and spirit of service.
I landed the job of a lifetime when I was thirteen years old. As the founder and CEO of my own company, I handed out sparkly purple business cards and established a local clientele for weekly babysitting jobs. The hours were flexible and the benefits couldn’t be topped.
As an intern at C&A industries, I have had what some might call a good experience and others might call a great experience. I prefer to think of it though as the best opportunity I’ve ever had to show what I can contribute to a company and that I can make an impact.
I, along with all of the other summer interns, have navigated through the challenges of all-nighters, dorm roommates, and colossal paper piles that have accumulated over the course of the semester – all part of the oh-so-complex life of a college student. However, this summer posed a question that drew us closer together than any
I came into this internship with one expectation – that afterwards I would have real-world “big girl” job experience to add to my resume. But as my time at C&A Industries is coming to an end, I am leaving with so much more than an addition to my work history.
